Turning her attention to how policy and research informs the educational system, Gernissia also received a Master’s degree in Education Policy from the University of Pennsylvania and began working in the research sector of education. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, Gernissia served as the Graduate Student Government Education Policy Senator and she was awarded the Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Citation for Excellence in Leadership and Innovation.
